Supporting Children after Crisis and Loss – One Year Later

Thursday, September 27, 2018

As the first anniversary of the 1 October concert shooting in Las Vegas approaches, many children are still having reactions to the tragic events. The anniversary and media coverage may cause children to experience fear, anxiety and other feelings they felt at the time of the shooting, or remind them of the loss or injury of someone they knew or loved.

Strong emotional reactions can occur even in children who have not experienced significant difficulty over the last year. In addition, attention to one crisis often reminds children of other
difficulties in their lives—whether they be past events, ongoing challenges, or concerns about futures losses or crises.

Drawing on over 30 years’ experience in providing support in the aftermath of tragedy, David J Schonfeld, MD, the Director of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement (SchoolCrisisCenter.org), will offer practical advice and answer questions about what we all can do to offer support to children in times of crisis and loss, as well as how to prepare children for the one-year anniversary of 1 October.

Representatives from the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center, Clark County School District and Adam’s Place (A Grief Center for Children and Families) will be present to answer questions and provide information about local resources for families. This event is coordinated by the Nevada Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). For more information or questions: info@schoolcrisiscenter.org.
