"As a facilitator, it has been an honor to support all Camp Cope participants on their journey by listening to their stories and teaching them healthy coping skills. Through this experience, I have gained a deeper understanding of grief and the challenges that all family members face when losing a loved one. Beyond that, I have formed lifelong friendships with fellow facilitators and staff at Adam’s Place. I am forever grateful for the experiences and memories I have made and deeply admire the incredible work they do to support grieving families and provide accessible care."

How do you encourage participants to share the negative aspects of their loss and how do we move on in the session if they choose not to do so?

The structure of our model allows participants to share what they choose, when they feel ready. Here are some ideas to help encourage comfortability.

Continually seek ways to create trust within the group, engage participants in ice breakers and other activities that foster connection.
Allow for different forms of self-expression. If a participant is hesitant to share verbally to the whole group, you can try journaling activities or pair participants with a partner to share responses.
As a facilitator, briefly model an age appropriate response.
Have a variety of activities prepared, if one activity is not working to generate conversation, move on to the next.
Attend Coffee and Coaching to connect with other facilitators and brainstorm additional approaches to aid you in facilitation.
