🌱 Big Feelings & Growing Bodies 🌱

March often brings signs of growth — longer days, new blossoms, shifting seasons. For children and teens who are grieving, growth can feel complicated. Bodies are changing. Emotions are intensifying. And grief doesn’t follow a neat timeline.

At Adam’s Place, we want families to know: big feelings during big growth periods are not a sign that something is wrong. They are signs that a child’s heart and body are working hard to make sense of loss.
Growth and grief can coexist. Big feelings are not setbacks — they are part of healing and development. At Adam’s Place, we believe in walking alongside families through every season, including the messy and uncertain ones.

You are not alone in this work. Connection is always available here.

🧠 How Grief Shows Up in Growing Kids & Teens 🧠

Grief looks different at different developmental stages.

  • Young children may move quickly between play and sadness. They might ask the same questions again and again. This repetition is how they process.
  • School-age children may show grief through behavior — irritability, stomachaches, difficulty concentrating, or heightened sensitivity.
  • Teens often experience grief alongside identity development. They may withdraw, seek independence more intensely, or feel emotions that seem “too big” for the situation.

As bodies grow, brains are also developing — especially the parts responsible for impulse control and emotional regulation. When grief is layered onto this growth, reactions can feel unpredictable. This is not misbehavior; it is a nervous system under stress.

Grief doesn’t just live in thoughts — it lives in bodies. Headaches, fatigue, restlessness, and sleep changes are all common responses.

🛠 Practical Tool for Caregivers: “Name & Normalize” 🛠
When emotions rise, try this two-step approach:
Name it gently
“I notice your body seems really tense.”
“That looked like a big wave of frustration.”

Normalize without minimizing
“It makes sense that you’d feel that way.”
“A lot of kids feel this when they miss someone.”

You don’t have to fix the feeling. Feeling understood helps the nervous system settle. Regulation grows through connection, not correction.

💙 Camp Cope: Growing Connection Together 🌱

As our Spring 2026 Camp Cope sessions continue, we are witnessing the quiet courage of children, teens, and caregivers showing up for themselves and one another. Camp Cope remains a free, supportive space where families grieving the loss of a loved one can gather, share, create, and remember — without pressure or expectation.

With only a few spring sessions remaining, we are already looking ahead to Fall Camp Cope. If you’ve been curious about joining, or if you’ve heard about the meaningful connections formed this season, we warmly encourage you to consider registering for the fall. Camp Cope can be attended as many times as needed. Grief changes over time, and support can be helpful at every stage.

If your family has found comfort in this space, we invite you to share Camp Cope with friends, neighbors, or extended family members who may be navigating loss. Sometimes a simple invitation can open the door to healing.

At Adam’s Place, we believe no child or caregiver should have to grieve alone. We are honored to continue walking alongside our community — this spring and beyond. 💙
