Help Us Continue Our Mission

Adam’s Place programs are made possible through the generosity of individual donors and community supporters. Your support helps us continue providing grief support, connection, and resources for grieving children and families.

To ensure these programs remain available for future generations, we need your help.
Donate today and help us make sure no child has to navigate grief alone.

At Adam’s Place, we recognize July as National Bereaved Parents Awareness Month. It's a special time to honor the parents and caregivers who are navigating life after the death of a child.

The grief that follows the loss of a child is a love story without an ending. It is carried in memories, milestones, quiet moments, and the many ways a child continues to be part of a family’s story. There is no timeline for this grief, and there is no “right” way to grieve.

This month, we hold space for bereaved parents and remind them: your child mattered, your love continues, and you do not have to walk this journey alone.

To every parent grieving the loss of a child. We see you, we honor you, and we stand with you.

Thank you to our community for continuing to support families through compassion, connection, and understanding. Together, we can ensure grieving parents and families have the support they deserve.

Staying Connected Through Change, Independence, and Healing

Grief can look different at every age, and adolescence is a time when emotions, identity, and independence are already changing. When a teen experiences the death of someone important, their grief may not always look the way adults expect. They may seem quiet, distant, frustrated, or focused on anything other than the loss. These responses are often a teen’s way of trying to make sense of something that feels overwhelming.

At Adam’s Place, we believe grieving teens deserve to be seen, heard, and supported without judgment. Healing does not mean forgetting the person who died or moving on; it means learning how to carry grief while continuing to grow, connect, and find moments of meaning.

This month, we are focusing on supporting grieving teens and helping caregivers understand the importance of staying connected, even during the moments when a teen appears to be pulling away.

Understanding Teen Grief: When Independence and Protection Meet

Teenagers naturally begin seeking more independence as they develop their sense of self. After a loss, this need for independence may become even stronger as they try to regain a sense of control in a world that has changed.

Grieving teens may cope by spending more time alone, taking more risks, becoming more private about their feelings, or appearing like they “don’t care.” These behaviors do not always mean a teen is not grieving. Sometimes, withdrawal is a form of protection. A teen may not have the words to explain what they are feeling, may worry about upsetting others, or may feel pressure to be “strong” for the people around them.

Caregivers can help by remembering that connection does not always require a big conversation. Often, consistent presence, patience, and small moments of support communicate: “I am here when you need me.”

You Are Not Alone

Grief is a journey that changes over time, and every person’s experience is unique. For grieving teens, having caring adults who remain present, patient, and willing to listen can make a meaningful difference.

At Adam’s Place, we are committed to providing grief support, connection, and resources for children, teens, families, and the community. Through programs like Camp Cope, we help grieving youth connect with others who understand and develop healthy coping skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Your support makes this work possible. When you donate to Adam’s Place, you help ensure grieving children and teens have access to the connection, compassion, and resources they deserve. Every contribution helps provide spaces where young people know they are not alone in their grief.

Thank you for being part of a community that shows up for grieving families.

Caregiver Tool: Connection Without Pressure

One helpful approach when supporting a grieving teen is to practice “open-door connection.”

Instead of asking repeated questions like, “Are you okay?” or “Do you want to talk about it?” (which can sometimes feel overwhelming), caregivers can create opportunities for connection by offering support without pressure.

Try phrases like:

I know grief can show up differently every day. I’m here if you ever want to talk.
You don’t have to talk about your feelings right now. I just want you to know you’re not carrying this alone.
Would you rather talk, go for a drive, watch something together, or just sit quietly?”

Small moments of connection—sharing a meal, taking a walk, running an errand together, or checking in with a simple text—can help teens feel supported while honoring their need for space.
