Back-to-School with Grief in Mind

As August arrives and the school year begins, many children and families in our community are preparing for new routines, teachers, and friendships. While this can be an exciting time, it can also bring a wave of emotions for those grieving the loss of a loved one.

At Adam’s Place, we know that grief doesn’t pause for the first day of school. For a child who has experienced loss, back-to-school season may be filled with anxiety, sadness, or a sense of missing someone who once played a big part in these moments—maybe a parent who helped with homework, a grandparent who picked them up, or a sibling who shared stories about their first day.

Here’s how we can support grieving children during this transition:

  • Create a Safe Space: Let them know it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions—excitement, sadness, confusion—all at once.

  • Honor Their Person: Consider simple rituals like packing a comforting note or a small memento in their backpack.

  • Keep Communication Open: Check in often, especially during the first few weeks of school.

  • Share with Educators: Inform teachers or school counselors about the loss so they can offer additional support and understanding.

This school year, let’s remember that every backpack may carry more than just books—some carry stories of love, loss, and incredible resilience.

🖤 National Grief Awareness Day – August 30 🖤
Shining a Light on Grief, One Heart at a Time

At Adam’s Place, every day is an opportunity to support grieving hearts—but on August 30, we pause with the rest of the nation to recognize National Grief Awareness Day. This day is a powerful reminder that grief is a natural, personal, and often invisible journey—and that no one should have to walk it alone.

Children and teens who are grieving often feel misunderstood or overlooked, especially when their pain isn’t always visible. National Grief Awareness Day encourages all of us to listen more, judge less, and create safe spaces where emotions are welcomed and healing can begin.

We invite you to honor this important day by:
💛 Starting a conversation about grief
💛 Reaching out to someone who may be hurting
💛 Learning more about how grief impacts young people

Let’s work together to raise awareness, show compassion, and remind our community that grief is love in a new form—and it deserves to be seen.
