Grief & School: Supporting Children as the School Year Winds Down

As April arrives, many of us begin to notice the school year shifting toward its final stretch. For children and teens who are grieving, this time can bring a mix of emotions—relief, stress, anticipation, and sometimes increased sadness or fatigue. What may look like “end-of-year burnout” can also be grief asking for attention.

At Adam’s Place, we want you to know that there is no “right” way for grief to show up in school. Each child’s experience is unique, and their needs may change from week to week—or even day to day. You are not alone in navigating this, and small moments of understanding can make a meaningful difference.

Understanding Grief in the School Setting

Grief doesn’t stay neatly contained outside the classroom. It often shows up in ways that can be misunderstood:

  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering assignments
  • Changes in behavior (withdrawal, irritability, restlessness)
  • Increased absences or reluctance to attend school
  • Big emotional reactions to seemingly small situations

As the school year comes to a close, routines shift, expectations increase, and transitions approach. For grieving children, transitions can bring up reminders of what has changed in their lives. Even positive events—like field days, performances, or moving up a grade—can feel complicated.

It’s important to remember: these responses are not “misbehavior”—they are communication.

🛠️ Practical Tool: Partnering with Your Child’s School

Open, collaborative communication with school staff can help create a more supportive environment for your child.

Try this approach:

  • Reach out to your child’s teacher, counselor, or school social worker
  • Share brief, relevant information about your child’s loss and current needs
  • Ask about what they’re noticing at school
  • Work together to identify small supports (flexible deadlines, check-ins, a quiet space)

Helpful phrase starters:

  • “I wanted to share that our family is navigating a loss, and it’s been affecting my child in different ways…”
  • “Have you noticed any changes in their focus or behavior lately?”
  • “What might help them feel more supported during the school day?”

You don’t have to share everything—just enough to build understanding and partnership.

As the school year begins to wind down, it’s okay if things don’t feel neat or finished. Grief doesn’t follow the academic calendar, and children don’t need to have it all together to move forward.

What matters most is that they feel seen, supported, and understood—at home, at school, and in their community.

At Adam’s Place, we are here to walk alongside you.
Your care, presence, and willingness to listen are powerful supports in your child’s journey.

As we move through April, we also come to the final Camp Cope session of Spring 2026. This time of closing can bring many different feelings—pride in showing up, connection with others, and sometimes a sense of hesitation as a meaningful space comes to a pause. However your family is experiencing this transition, we want you to know that it all belongs.

Throughout this spring, we have witnessed children, teens, and caregivers sharing their stories in ways that feel right for them—through conversation, creativity, quiet presence, and connection. Camp Cope continues to be a space where grief is met with understanding, where there is no pressure to “move on,” and where each person can show up exactly as they are.

As this session comes to a close, we want to gently remind families that support does not end here. Fall Camp Cope will begin again in September 2026, and registration is now open. Grief changes over time, and many families find that returning—whether it’s their second time or their fifth—offers new layers of support and connection.

If Camp Cope has felt meaningful to your family, you might consider sharing this opportunity with someone in your life who may be navigating loss. A simple, caring invitation can help another family feel less alone.

At Adam’s Place, we are honored to hold space with you—in moments of connection, in times of transition, and in all that comes in between. We look forward to welcoming families back in the fall and continuing this work together. 💙

As the world around us begins to bloom, we’re invited to notice what might be gently growing within us, too. “Growing Through What’s Growing Around Us: Renewal Amid Grief” is a space to honor both the pain of loss and the quiet, resilient ways we continue forward. 🌱💛

Guided by the compassionate insight of Paul Clements, PhD, and Alyssa Schutz, APRN, PMHNP-BC, this virtual gathering offers meaningful conversation, reflection, and connection with others who understand.

Grief doesn’t follow seasons—but sometimes, the soft shift of spring can bring moments of renewal, even if they’re small. Wherever you are in your journey, you are welcome here. 🌿

If you’ve been holding your grief quietly, feeling stuck, or simply needing a space to be seen and supported, this group is for you.

💻 Virtual gathering

✨ Registration is required — we would be honored to have you join us.

We are continually inspired by the strength of our Camp Cope families and community.

As we work to secure ongoing funding to keep our programs available, we are gathering brief stories from those who have experienced their impact firsthand. Your words help illustrate the real difference these spaces make for children, teens, and families navigating grief.

If Camp Cope or any Adam’s Place program has touched your life, we would be grateful if you would share a few sentences about your experience—what you or your child gained, a meaningful moment, or what support has meant to your family. Photos are also welcome, and you may choose to remain anonymous if preferred.

Thank you for helping us continue to provide hope, connection, and healing to families who need it most. 💛

You shared, and we listened 💛

Many Camp Cope caregivers expressed a desire to stay connected with one another beyond our sessions—a space to continue supporting, sharing, and walking alongside each other outside of camp.

We are so grateful to respond to that need by offering a private Facebook community just for Camp Cope caregivers.

This group is a place to stay connected, share resources, and continue building the sense of understanding and support that begins in Camp Cope.

We look forward to continuing this journey together 💛

We would love for you to join us!
